Smartphones: Changing the Way of Life

Since ancient times, we have used maps to help us get around but now we have GPS. In the days gone by, we wrote letters to tell of news and stories, but now we type emails. And also in the past, we had to use telephones attached to the wall, but now we can make a call from anywhere in the world thanks to smartphones. A smartphone is a compact telephone device, which has more of the features and programs of a mobile cell phone and a computer combined. The smartphone is especially useful for professionals who need easy and regular internet access. The small size of the smartphone makes it very handy and portable as well, as it can be carried around in your pocket instead of a laptop bag. Smartphones also have their own operating system, processor and storage memory, like a computer. At the beginning, when smartphones were first launched, these features needed work but in time have developed to a superior quality. Gradually, after the first models came out, mobile phone giants developed their own smartphones, such as Nokia, Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Ericcson to name but a few.

The first smartphone was made and launched by the renowned IBM computer company, and it was known as “Simon”. Whether it was a very high quality product or not was immaterial, as it set a standard position and cast a pathway for the development of better quality smartphones. The biggest jump in the smartphone generation came when the company, Apple, launched the “iPhone”, which is the first touch screen phone. The iPhone was followed by the all other smartphones like “HTC touch”, which is developed by HTC Ltd., and the LG Prada, which is developed and launched by LG Company. The company Apple Inc. launched a modified version of the iPhone in 2008 after observing the users’ feedback and market share. Following on from this, in 2010, Google Inc. launched its product named “Nexus One” in direct competition to the Apple iPhone, which works on the Android operating system. Young adults are regarded as the biggest consumer group for these touch screen phones, as smartphones offer so much choice, coming in various models, styles and colors.
