Lady Gaga dresses up as red cockscomb!

Source From: http://www.examiner.com/fashion-in-atlanta/lady-gaga-dresses-up-as-red-cockscomb

Atlanta Lady Gaga fans, the fashion iconoclast is up to her old self again – donning yet another outrageous fashion creation and new dark red platform shoes to tax any ankle – just in case you were a bit concerned for her that she was having an identity crisis!

The Queen of Pop was spotted at the Atom Factory VMA Dinner in Los Angeles on Friday 26 August, 2011 wearing an outfit that looked like a bright red cockscomb at the waist and abdomen.

The plunging necklace revealed that Lady Gaga chose not to wear her bra to the event but she did accessorize to the hilt with a huge diamond necklace, thick leggings – in the heat of summer – and her signature break-neck clodhoppers. Her kidney-shaped red clutch bag was very tasteful though as were her lovely sunglasses.

Gaga, who is normally known for her signature scarlet red lipstick, actually wore a black tint instead to match her raven hued pointed nails. The platinum blond updo with bangs must have had add-ons as there was a lot of hair in her bun!

The diva was there to perform at the VMA awards on Sunday 28 August, which she did as her alter ego Jo Calderone but more on that later – with pictures! Promise…

Fashion News: Barneys New York taps Lady Gaga for holiday campaign

Source From: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/alltherage/2011/08/fashion-news-barneys-new-york-taps-lady-gaga-for-holiday-campaign.html

One of the presents we opened in our email inbox this morning was an announcement that Lady Gaga would be serving up her interpretation of Santa's workshop as part of Barneys New York's holiday campaign called "Gaga's Workshop." The announcement reads, in part:

"Barneys New York has worked closely with Lady Gaga under the creative direction of Nicola Formichetti to design a range of exclusive, limited-edition, small gift items, which will be available for a limited time only at Gaga's Workshop. In addition to Gaga's Workshop in New York, a selection of items from the collection will also be available at Barneys New York locations nationwide and online at Barneys.com."

The retailer will be donating 25% of sales from all items featured in the workshop to a charity of Lady Gaga’s choice.

If you ask us, Christmas can't come soon enough.

The latest in shoe-collaboration news? Apparently London-based shoe designer Mark Fast has teamed up with Aldo. At least that's what they're saying over at Catwalk Queen.

In other shoe matters, the legal equivalent of the "Red Shoe Diaries" takes another step forward (or is it back?), with industry trade paper WWD reporting that Christian Louboutin plans to appeal the recent ruling by a federal judge in Manhattan that allows YSL to sell red-sole shoes.

Speaking of Manhattan, Opening Ceremony, which always throws a good party, celebrated the Bean Pole x Kim Jones collaboration with a good, old-fashioned block party on Friday.

Summer block party season will eventually give way to the tailgating and football season, and now team spirit will be as close as the nearest Old Navy. Seventy of the nation's top college athletic programs will team up with the Gap-owned label to sell branded clothes and accessories at stores across the country.

Fashion News: Helen Mirren, David Beckham are 'Bodies of the Year'

Source From: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/alltherage/2011/08/fashion-news-helen-mirren-david-beckham.html

In a poll conducted by gym chain L.A. Fitness, 2,000 respondents said that Dame Helen Mirren is the "Body of the Year." At 66, Mirren beat out Jennifer Lopez, Pippa Middleton and Elle MacPherson, among others. Winning on the male side: soccer star (and model and budding clothing designer) David Beckham.

There was another royal-ish wedding over the weekend. Zara Phillips -- cousin to Britain's Prince William, daughter of Princess Royal Anne and granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II -- married rugby player Mike Tindall. The bride wore a full-skirted gown in silk faille and duchess satin with a chevron pleated corseted bodice, by couturier Stewart Parvin, and a fine tulle veil.

Prince William's wife, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, kept things low-key at the wedding, careful not to upstage the bride. The Duchess wore a cream coat that she's been seen in before. As far back as Laura Parker Bowles' wedding in 2006, in fact.

The price of gold reached an all-time high of $1,637.50 an ounce on Friday. This is a big reason we're seeing less gold, and more gemstones, in jewelry.

Biographer Lisa Chaney has a new book on Coco Chanel scheduled for release in November, and in it she claims to have evidence that the designer used drugs, embraced bisexuality and had an affair with a married Salvador DalĂ. Oh, and that one of her lovers spied for the Nazis. I'm not sure how much of this is supposed to be surprising.

Emma Watson Waves Wand at Fashion Design

Source From: http://celebs.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474979718736

Harry Potter's Emma Watson is making a career move into the fashion world. She's designing clothing. Designing is practically trending among female celebs these days—think Jessica Simpson, Victoria Beckham or the Olsen twins—but Emma no doubt has her own approach. She's already designed a line of tee shirts, reports Daily Mail, but she really wants to work on custom evening gowns.

Emma Watson has spent an unusual amount of time in evening wear lately, what with various parties and premieres promoting the final Potter movie—Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-Part 2. Most likely she knows what works and what doesn't. And she will be comfortable working with celebs, since she has been in the public eye since she was nine.

"Emma wants to challenge herself creatively," says a source close to the actress." Another source reports, "She's obsessed with art at the moment." Most importantly, she has already made more money than most people earn in a lifetime—several times over, so Emma Watson can do whatever she pleases. If she wants to start a fashion line, she won't need backers. She can finance herself.

Emma Watson takes inspiration from designers such as Georgina Chapman and Sarah Burton. Sarah Burton, royal-watchers will remember, designed the wedding dress for Kate Middleton. So far, Emma's career has been pretty much dictated by the Harry Potter saga. It will be interesting to follow what she does on her own.

Royal fashion: Kate Middleton shows diplomacy in Canada

Source from: http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/jul/03/royal-fashion-kate-middleton-diplomacy-canada

Let's skip the debate over whether or not Duchess Kate is a style icon. She's not, by the way – but that misses the point. What she is, rather, is a fashion diplomat. During this, her first foreign tour, she has shown an impressive ability to use her wardrobe as a tool for doing what royals are supposed to do on foreign tours. Her clothes show respect, bring an emotional warmth that strengthens historic and strategic bonds, and send a positive message about the country and family she represents – not that the protesters in Quebec were necessarily taking any notice of that.

Canadian symbols have featured prominently in Kate's looks so far. Her arrival outfit was a navy lace dress – very chic, her best look so far – by the designer Erdem, who is Canadian-born but lives and works in London. A smart touch, to reference the historic links between Britain and Canada in a contemporary way. The red maple leaf hat was another respectful nod, and the diamond maple leaf brooch, which she borrowed from the Queen for the trip, served both as a mark of respect to Canada and a way of bringing the Queen into the conversation.

The fitted grey dress she wore on Friday was not as pretty as her other outfits, but even this was deliberate. The day would have been Diana, Princess of Wales's 50th birthday, so Kate chose a sombre dress by Catherine Walker, who was a favoured designer, friend and confidante of Diana. It was a classy thing to do: to put herself in the shadows a little, and shift the focus to Diana.

Kate's signature look is defined by a sleek, slender silhouette, simple colour, and permanently red-carpet-ready hair. Royals on tour need to be recognisable, and she is: she knows as well as any spin doctor the pitfalls of over-complicating the message. There is not a lot of flair in how she dresses. The fan bag and the sparkly shoes are eye-catching, but a rather obvious way of signifying glamour for evening events. But flair is not what her wardrobe is about. As a diplomat of dress, she is rather impressive.

Paris Fashion Week: Thom Browne's flapper and fringe festival

Source from: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/alltherage/2011/06/paris-fashion-week-thom-browne-ss12.html

Thom Browne showed his spring and summer 2012 menswear collection in the intimate venue of the famed Maxim's restaurant on Rue Royale, and it kicked off with the clink of Champagne glasses and to the strains of "Willkommen" from Kander and Ebb's "Cabaret."

What followed after that was Browne's usual curio cabinet of tailored pieces, garments that often seem designed more to showcase his skills than to be worn out in the real world -- such as the fringed lampshade bucket hat worn by the first model down the runway, and cape shoulders as square and angular as a chair back.

Based in a color palette of black and gray with his traditional red-white-and-blue accents, the collection of suits, jackets, capes, shirt dresses and shorts was heavy on the stripes and nearly as heavy on the fringe, which seemed to dangle from every garment edge imaginable -- jacket shoulder pads, trousers, the hems of jackets and shirts, the aforementioned lampshade hats, and at least two full-on dresses -- one knee-length number in alternating blue and white striped tiers of flapper fringe, and a tiered flapper fringe dress in black, (worn over a white dinner jacket) and fringe-edged scarves so long they dragged on the ground.

The multitude of stripes, the fringe and the bare arms (many looks -- even the suits -- had dispensed with arms altogether, and either hung like capes or more closely resembled vests), helped elongate the silhouette, as did the strands of pearls that hung loosely from neck to knees, and the black socks held up by garters of red-white-and-blue grosgrain.

What the full-on flapper regalia stole focus from, however, was the fact that Thom Browne's man-boy silhouette is continuing its evolution. The models that sauntered and glowered their way through the dining room looked more "Matrix" than Maxim's, and even without the padded jackets and vests, clearly had stronger shoulders and more muscular arms than many of the models that have walked his shows in the past.

It's a welcome change.

Rent the Runway Scores $15 Million From Kleiner Perkins

News source from: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/05/23/rent-the-runway-scores-15-million-from-kleiner-perkins/

Rent the Runway, a New York start-up that lets women rent high-end fashion items like dresses, shoes and jewelry by mail has already hit several milestones in the last 18 months. The company said it passed a million members and was turning a profit.

Next on the company’s checklist? An additional round of venture capital.

On Monday, the company announced it raised $15 million in a Series B round venture financing. The round was backed entirely by the Silicon Valley financier Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Previously, the company raised $16 million from Highland Capital and Bain Capital.

The fresh infusion of cash will go to expanding operations, said Jennifer Hyman, co-founder and chief executive of the company.

"We calls ourselves the Netflix for fashion, but the logistics of our business are very different from a Netflix or even a service like Zipcar," said Ms. Hyman. "When a dress is returned, we have to dry clean it and do repairs. How quickly and carefully we turn it around is extremely integral to the customers experience."

Ms. Hyman said the company has encountered some growing pains as the business has rapidly expanded from its start as a retail upstart in Manhattan.

To feed consumers' increasing appetite for high-end rental apparel and accessories, some of the money raised will be used to open additional distribution centers outside of New York. In addition, Ms. Hyman said the company is looking to invest in streamlining the way it fulfills orders.

"We're building an inventory and logistics-management system to track and understand how inventory moves across the country," she said.

The venture funding will also go toward expanding some of the site's features. Rent the Runway will soon include a recommendation engine to help shoppers find dresses based on the occasion they are attending, whether the event is a black-tie event or a summery wedding.

In addition, Ms. Hyman said the company planned to incorporate a new social layer that would let friends who are shopping for the same occasion coordinate their outfits, make recommendations to each other and potentially receive group discounts.
