MEXICO CITY — The models who strode the runway at a recent fashion show here were not only showing off the latest in Mexican designs for hundreds of spectators. Wearing midriff-baring tunics and silk tops emblazoned with bright patterns resembling hieroglyphs, they were also harkening way back to their country’s sartorial past.

Growing numbers of Mexican designers are drawing inspiration from the pre-Columbian clothing widely worn during the country’s bicentennial celebrations last year, and they’re coming up with fashions that give tradition a contemporary twist.

Known as huipiles, the long and loose tunics designed with vivid patterns of birds, flowers and geometrical shapes had for centuries identified the origin and marital status of indigenous women in Mexico and Central America.

The huipiles (pronounced wee-PEE-lays) are now being produced with manufactured and non-native fabrics such as silk rather than the cotton and wool that generations of women had worn along with finely woven lace. The clothing has also picked up sex appeal with the cleavage-baring dresses and belly shirts seen in Mexico’s trendiest fashion houses.

If anything, the new designs represent a revival for a clothing tradition that has recently fallen out of favor in poverty-stricken Mexican villages where generations of young people have both left behind their homes and their customs.

Designer Lydia Lavin said the resurgence began last year with the indigenous-inspired garments worn by politicians, artists and other public figures during Mexico’s $40 million festivities.

“We began to see how people were reassessing Indian art,” said another designer, Paulina Fosado. “Before, if you were to put something indigenous on, they would ask you ‘Why would you wear that?’ Now it’s in style.”

In their most recent show, Fosado and her twin sister Malinali Fosado unveiled a peach-colored cocktail dress with pink and orange floral embroidery, sleeves made of silk chiffon and a neckline plunging to just above the navel. Another model wore a puffy violet dress and a shawl with beaded fringe that had been sewn into the piece.

Some dresses dipped down to the small of the back, while other pieces were hand-woven with cotton and wool thread to form geometrical patterns of birds, leaves and flowers. Paulina Fosado said she and her sister balanced the use of heavy textiles with lighter, softer fabrics to create “dresses with a lot of movement.”

The Fosados’ goal is to turn the clothing into an internationally recognized symbol of Mexican identity, like what the kimono is to Japan or the sari is to India.

Ana Paula Fuentes, director of the Oaxaca Textile Museum, says many aspiring designers have stopped by her institution offering to work as volunteers to learn how to make the traditional clothing.

She said for centuries, the technique was passed down among indigenous women in southern Mexico and Central America, where since childhood they learned skills such as using the backstrap loom, in which weavers fasten panels to their waists and hand-spin naturally colored cotton threads between fibers.

Disillusioned by what the fashion industry offers women who are not rail-thin 20-something exhibitionists, Candace Stauffer decided she’d rather skip a big black-tie event than go in a second-rate outfit.

“You want to look sexy, but you don’t want to look slutty, either,” said Stauffer, who lives in Bedminster. “You want heads to turn when you walk into a room.”

So she and her husband, John, stayed home from his company’s Christmas party last year.

This year, John suggested his wife consult Jill Strickland, owner of the Frox boutique in Perkasie, whose hair Stauffer did when she worked at a salon in the borough.

Strickland pulled out her magic wand — a talent for personalizing clothes to a woman’s body shape and an inventory of stylish clothes — and like a fashion Cinderella, Stauffer is ready for the ball.

For her client, Strickland chose “a kimono-sleeved dress that cinches in at the waist, but hides the hips a little bit — I tend to be a little curvier,” said Stauffer. “The dress was beautiful purplish-blue, but she put big, bold gold jewelry with it, and a gold clutch bag ... she really just has an eye for fashion.”

Strickland grew up in the Vermilion Hills section of Levittown, displaying a predilection for fashion styling at a very young age.

“I had three older sisters, and I would always dress them up,” she said. “I would help them when I was, like, 7 years old, dress up for their dates.”

She started her career at an entry-level job at a clothing warehouse in Plumsteadville, and eventually became an independent sales representative for clothing manufacturers.

She opened her shop nine years ago after being stranded far from home on Sept. 11, 2001. On that day, she decided, “I never wanted to be more than two blocks from my children. I shouldn’t have to risk my life to sell clothes.”

She found storefront space in a 90-year-old building on North 7th Street and renovated it with the help of her husband, Stephen, who’s a general contractor.

Her business plan revolves around fashionable clothes for pear- and apple-shaped women as well as for those with slender, symmetrical figures. The competition began online with hundreds of local designers competing to display their creations at St. Louis Fashion Week. Ultimately, six hopeful designers received the most votes online and Kelley Miller, Stephen Curd, Caroline Williard, Sierra Moses, Cindy Brown and Brittany M. Davidson sent models down the runway as the designers battled it out to be crowned St. Louis’ hottest up and coming designer. With various dreams, goals and ambitions in mind, some of the designers, including Cindy Brown, who spent a year studying at Washington University, put everything they had into their collections and hope to design full time in the near future.

Though the pinnacle of the competition lasted for roughly an hour, the crowning of the top designer would change the course of the winner’s career. The winner left the night with support to help launch his or her line, a small drop of fame and a golden dress form.

The show itself featured many unique trends and demonstrated the notion that St. Louis’ fall fashion spans a wide range of styles, from powerful Asian influences to the romanticism of the flower child. I personally had two favorites but agree with the judges’ choice of Stephen Curd as winner of the grand prize, as I found his collection to be the most visually interesting.

Kelley Miller from St. Louis, Mo., brought the softness and delicacy of the ’70s flower child to open Tuesday night’s runway show. The models, styled with poufy bedroom hair, strutted, wearing lace pants, maxi skirts and hot pants representative of the designer’s design style, which is inspired by photography from that era. The maroons, whites and golden rust colors presented in her collection are excellent for fashionable St. Louisans to don this season.

Brittany M. Davidson from Overland Park, Kan., experimented with combining textures in an unusual way to create a soft-yet-hard effect. Leather and chiffon, stiff satin and delicate flower petals and numerous feathered headpieces covered the runway during this segment. Generally speaking, the cohesive collection was very feminine without being too girly. Through her fabric choices, Davidson also showed locals ways to wear voguish animal prints without being so obvious.

Stephen Curd, the 2011 winner of Project:Design! competition, was the only designer to feature both male and female models. He brought variety with his collection and conveyed a diverse point of view with influences ranging from the ’90s to a British schoolboy to the KFC Colonel’s tie. In addition to his success here in St. Louis, Curd has also been invited to show the collection next week at Chicago Fashion Week and, in a recent interview with the Riverfront Times, sums the whole experience well by stating, “We’re all different designers. I just know who I am and what I like, so that’s what I try to bring in to every collection I do.”
